Choosing a Surgeon
Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani is Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
Considering breast surgery? Make sure your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Once you make the personal decision to get cosmetic surgery, your first essential step is choosing a qualified surgeon. There are many plastic surgeons out there, so how can you determine which are the most competent, skilled, and experienced?
Our team at The Aesthetic Surgery Center recommends choosing a surgeon that is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). By choosing a plastic surgeon that is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc., you can be assured that the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed at least five years of additional training as a resident surgeon in an accredited program. To become certified, the doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams. The ABPS sets high standards to ensure patients’ safety and demands ethical conduct of their certified surgeons.
Below are things to consider when deciding who will perform your surgery:
- Is your doctor who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery certified in the specific specialty area associated with the procedure you are considering?
- What qualifications/training does the physician have to perform the procedure in question?
- How many of this type of procedure has he/she performed?
- How many of this type of procedure does he/she perform each year?
- If you are considering a new procedure, how did the doctor obtain training for this?
- Has the doctor had many problems or complications with this procedure?
- Is the surgical facility utilized accredited?
A personal consultation with the board-certified plastic surgeon you are considering will help you make your final decision. You need to be confident in your surgeon’s expertise and know that your safety and wellbeing is his or her top priority. It is important to be comfortable with your surgeon and to have your opinions respected and heard. Your surgeon should welcome your questions and answer them thoroughly and clearly. You have the right to know about your surgeon’s qualifications and experience, as well as any information about the procedures you want, their costs, and payment policies. Your surgeon should be interested in your preferred procedures and offer possible alternatives, where appropriate, without pressuring you to consider unneeded or additional surgery. They should further make clear the risks of surgery and possible outcomes. The surgeon should always leave the final decision up to you.
