About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation , also known as breast enlargement or breast enhancement, is a type
of surgery that uses saline breast implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. Women choose to
have breast augmentation surgery to enhance smaller breasts, to lift a sagging bustline, or to create more
symmetrical breasts. Breast augmentation can also be performed after breast removal - also known as breast
reconstruction. Dr. Trevisani offers breast
augmentation at his Maitland, Florida offices - conveniently located for residents of Orlando,
Melbourne, and Daytona Beach.
Breast Implant Surgery
Breast implant surgery generally takes one to two hours to complete and will be
performed under general anesthesia. There are several ways breast augmentation can be performed and Dr.
Trevisani will discuss each of these with you. Depending on the size of your breasts and your level of
physical activity, Dr. Trevisani may decide on one of the following breast augmentation incision and placement types:
• Periareolar submuscular - in this type of breast augmentation surgery the
incision is made around the areola and the breast implant is placed behind the chest
muscle.
• Periareolar subglandular - this type of breast augmentation surgery
involves an incision made around the areola with the breast implant placed above the chest
muscle.
• Inframmary submuscular - in this type of breast augmentation surgery the incision
is made in the fold under the breast and the implant is placed behind the chest muscle.
• Inframmary subglandular - this type of breast augmentation surgery involves an incision
made in the fold under the breast with the implant placed above the chest muscle.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Immediately following breast augmentation your breasts will be bandaged with gauze. You will feel sore for a few days after your surgery, but will be up and around within 24 to 48 hours. After a few days, the gauze will be removed and you may be given a surgical bra. Within a week to 10 days after your surgery, the stitches will be taken out. It may take another three to five weeks for the swelling in your breasts to subside.
Dr. Trevisani will give you instructions on when you can return to daily activity and exercise. However, since your breasts will be sore for a few weeks, you should avoid direct contact until the soreness subsides. You can expect the scars to remain pink for several months, but they will begin to fade (although they will not disappear completely).
